I found nothing wrong with Bishop Mariann's sermon. Nothing disrespectful. Quite compassionate, nothing negative about it. She didn't speak in a lecturing or scornful tone, but was soft spoken in her delivery.
I respectfully disagree. The biblical concept of "Ger Toshav" that you speak of speaks of responsibilities also of the foreigner in your land. They must live by the laws of the land, period and if they don't....
The Bishop unfortunately has had the habit of equivocating on this war. I struggle with the thought of this, what does she think would have happened to Jesus on October 7th had he been spending Shabbat Simchat Torah on the Gaza border.
Jill, our community needs our laser focus more than ever. Our own "healing" from this will take decades, please reconsider.
It's a philosophical difference....I believe our community needs our 200% focus our efforts only on our community....I'm not calling you out, I think there are times when our beliefs to help others need to be put aside until our own community is taken care of.....
I'd like to know specificities on those being denied paperwork, whether it's due to their standing with those titles I'm unconvinced, there's a radical leftist transgender rabbi in Minnesota named Jessica Rosenberg who has a goatee and when Biden was here last year showing his initial sympathies she called for him to be killed after he visited and she was the one yelling out from the crowd interrupting his speech, somehow she has not been talked about a lot amongst the local Jewish community and federation, there's a lot of tolerance for radical leftists who are a shonda for the golem and for the Jews, I find it reprehensible that she still has a pulpit to speak from even though I despise Joe Biden and the shitstorm that the Democrat party is.
People like that should be detained and questioned as they are probably affiliated with international nefarious organizations and agendas to clarify why they are calling for the president of the United States to be killed.
Awaiting further context.
Huge empathy for Indians being wronged by America and got emotional watching Indians visit Israel to show their solidarity with the indigenous Jews, I work with an Anishenabe dude and big respect.
She might have been worth a mild mention if she had brought up the Injustice of the hostages being kept by The barbarians but nope she hyper focused on agenda, a progressive leftist intersectional church-based political devoid of logic worship
Her position and the way she brought it into the spotlight at the inauguration were confrontational, and her tone and posturing were very cringeworthy—not helping her cause much, in my opinion.
Yes. Perfect. Toda. (Did you google her as I did beforehand to … be sure? It’s a thing I never did on wonder about … but do now. She’s walked the line well … for the most part.)
Sorry Jill, I don’t like to disagree with someone whom I follow and respect, but I think you’re wrong here. Bishop Budde’s sermon was not inspiring or brave nor did it come from a place of genuine concern for immigrants, minorities or LGBT people. She did it for attention and fame. It was a very sanctimonious and arrogant sermon. To do it in front of the President and Vice President of the United States made it even worse. You may not like those elected to the Oval Office but put your personal feelings aside. Bishop Budde’s sermon should’ve been one about national unity and loving you’re neighbor regardless of his or her politics. That is the sermon this country truly needs right now. Of course we as Christians are called to welcome the stranger in our midst and we absolutely should. We should treat immigrants who come to this country with kindness, respect and dignity absolutely. But her sermon fails to mention once the terrible crisis at the Southern Border and whitewashes and oversimplifies the situation. This isn’t just a simple matter of desperate people coming here who need our help and big bad Trump and Vance are cruelly having them deported because they don’t look like us. The Border Patrol was not allowed to enforce the laws on the books and our border was very vulnerable. The Mexican Drug Cartels took advantage of this, and assisted seven million illegal immigrants from over 100 different countries to get into America illegally, in doing so they often raped their wives, robbed them and trafficked their children. On top of that, when these immigrants get to America they basically become serfs to them as they have to pay off the debt they owe them for smuggling them across. The cartels have made billions on the human trafficking of immigrant women and children not to mention the deadly drug Fentanyl which they under the Biden administration smuggled tons of into our country. With no way to properly process anyone or find out who they are, criminals and terrorists got into America. You also had folks coming from enemy nations like Russia, China and Iran. So the possibility of spies and saboteurs coming in is great. Not to mention people have died at the hands of some of these illegal immigrants like Laken Riley and A.J. Wise. The crisis at the border is a complex situation. Nor is it a mere matter of immigration but also encompasses national security and humanitarian concerns. I am center-left politically. I’m all for immigration reform, raising the immigration quota, giving amnesty and a pathway to citizenship to undocumented immigrants who’ve been here for awhile (like the dreamers), abolishing ICE, starting a temporary worker program, etc. I have no problem at all with immigrants. But we must have a secure border, enforce the laws on the books, protect our citizens, stop the human and drug trafficking, and deport the seven million who’ve come across the border. Most are good people looking for a better life I agree. But we can’t have all these people come in at once with no way to know who they are or why their here and their taking away resources from American citizens who desperately need it. It should done humanely and with families kept together, but it must be done. On another note, I disagree with Mr. Trump on many issues and he has his flaws no doubt. But he’s not the monster many make him out to be. Bishop Budde talks as if he’s the next Hitler. He took away no one’s rights during his first term and won’t do so now. He’s not a racist, sexist, xenophobe, etc. I have my disagreements with Donald Trump but he is my President now and I wish him all the best. Bishop Budde’s sermon served only to inflame the political polarization and tribalism that plagues our society at this time. She essentially made herself famous at the expense of her country. That’s not right. But I will say, I do admire you recommitting yourself to helping the stranger Jill that is very noble. But I think you are wrong to praise Bishop Budde because I question her motives and she over-simplifies the immigration issue and demonizes Trump and half the country as bigots.
I can understand that point of view. Trump definitely can come off that way. I know a number of people personally who don't like him either. But again, I respect your opinion Jill even if I disagree with it!
Brilliant, perfectly said, the left will not look inward despite you pointing out truths that need to be pointed out, they just get more obtuse and dedicated to the leftism as opposed to the truth despite calling themselves liberal
Actually it is. Totally open borders for 4 years. No vetting of migrants. Can you imagine that the push back would be not so great? If Democrats had a brain in their heads this wouldn’t have happened.
Again, a gross generalization, but that aside - it's the Bishop's actions here I'm addressing, not Biden's. Biden is no longer President; she's addressing the current President. And yes, the issues that she's talking about are real.
On the face of it her word about migrants are fine. The gay and trans kids who ‘fear for their lives’ is crap. It’s pretty clear that there is no such thing as a ‘trans’ kid. This is just standard rhetoric.
The issue always is. When the counter revolution comes it’s ugly. This is the counterrevolution.
Did she mention Jews, including children and teens, who have been under nonstop (worldwide) assault from the left, especially since October 7, 2023, and what this administration can and should do about that? Did she mention “Queers for Palestine” or any of the other LGBTQ bigotry against Jews and supporters of Israel’s right to exist?
She doesn’t need to. It wasn’t a sermon about the Jews - and thank God it wasn’t, because the goyim sermons that zero-in on the Jews leave much to be desired.
Correct. It is just hard for me to put much stock in a pastor (correctly) identifying the LGBTQ community as minority victims of bigotry and hate, while ignoring the bigotry and hate being perpetrated by that minority against another.
She brought up those groups specifically because those are the ones that Trump and his supporters have expressed very specific disdain for. It was appropriate given the context.
Thumbs down! Both thumbs. You must not only choose your words, you’ve got to choose your time and place. Right or wrong about the issues, embarrassing a head of state publicly odd not the way to further your cause or your influence.
Oh boo hoo, Trump, who is perhaps king of insults and inappropriate rhetoric towards others, got "embarrassed"! It's really incredible to me reading the words of his defenders - so basically, he's the only one allowed to insult and belittle others, and no one is allowed to have a valid reaction to his behavior? The Bishop was speaking in a calmed and measured tone (which I know infuriated him further). Hypocrisy at its finest.
Did you hear me defending him? Rather, I’m telling the bishop that if she wants to espouse a cause, do it effectively. Of her goal was specifically to put down, then she was successful. If her goal was to speak on behalf of those she feels have no voice, she was a dismal failure.
I don’t dismiss that aspect. However, she did not gain anyone to promote her position. Some of the millions supporting her already would have, and have been condemning the same things. The other millions talking about her statement are ridiculing her, either for her position or her thoughtlessness. In either case, she gained nothing and likely lost footing.
I'm disgruntled that she spread her leftist bullshit at the inauguration as others are also
Those of the left often close comments only to let paying commenters comment
You acknowledge that by stating you won't censor me but you're not engaging in any of the criticism that she blathered about regarding persecuted and fearful lesbian and gay and transgender children, where is this a thing?
I never close my comments. Why don’t you post these poignant verses on your own Substack and send us all a link when you do so? I look forward to reading your work, sir.
I mean, I'm sure the opinions vary among that community depending on who you talk to. There's no doubt in my mind that some are expressing fear, hence why it's being brought up. But I can't speak for anyone in that category.
The opinions of those who claim to be scared are based on the Project 2025 agenda, which I can't take seriously. The other frightened group is engrossed in a debate over Elon Musk's "Nazi salute," another hard pass for me. So I don't know whose fears the clergywoman referred to. However, one thing I do know, after living in San Francisco for 10 years, 10 years in NYC, and now in the suburbs of Chicago (all very blue places), is that good intentions and feelings are not a basis for government policies and legacy as they ignore the history of disastrous, repeated failures. The clergyperson might not be burdened by the results of bad policies but the elected officials should.
The clergy lady spoke of gay and lesbian and transgender children specifically being persecuted and threatened and fearful, doesn't everybody know a bunch of kids trembling in fear who are gay lesbian and transgender?
Lol. I am a little younger than the Boomer generation and came to the US as a refugee from the former Soviet Union, after waiting for many years to enter the US. I grew up during the Cold War era, I have some idea what tyranny means, and especially how propaganda works. No need to handle with kid gloves :-)
My rabbi spoke about this speech last night at services. I’ll be writing about this soon… meanwhile four more hostages back.
He wouldn't be upset if he didn't have a guilty conscience.
I found nothing wrong with Bishop Mariann's sermon. Nothing disrespectful. Quite compassionate, nothing negative about it. She didn't speak in a lecturing or scornful tone, but was soft spoken in her delivery.
Thank you. Good to know at least some of my readers have some sense! Dear lord.
Ew. "Dear lord...at least some of my readers have some sense!" Ew. How "liberal" of you to articulate your point of view this way.
Thanks for the feedback on how to articulate my own personal views. I will keep that in mind for the future.
I respectfully disagree. The biblical concept of "Ger Toshav" that you speak of speaks of responsibilities also of the foreigner in your land. They must live by the laws of the land, period and if they don't....

At what point did I suggest that our community doesn't need our focus?
......"But Bishop Mariann reminded me that it might be time to redirect some of my attention outward again. I thank her for that."
I understand where you are coming from... imho, respectfully, now is the time to double down in our own community...
They're not mutually exclusive concepts, Zaq.
It's a philosophical difference....I believe our community needs our 200% focus our efforts only on our community....I'm not calling you out, I think there are times when our beliefs to help others need to be put aside until our own community is taken care of.....

To be fair she was talking "local politics" which she still left out any mention of the violent antisemitism
Unlikely she would have been remembered as a righteous gentile. I don't understand how she got inserted into that
I disagree-Her woke perspective on race and gender is a primary reason why the Democrats lost the election
No. It's not because of HER that the Democrats lost. The Democrats have their (our) own issues but she's not the reason for it.
Her sermon clearly was an example of a woke sermon dressed up in quasi religious doctrine

However sanctimonious and arrogant it was, it's nothing compared to the sanctimony and arrogance of those she was addressing.
Sometimes it takes a sanctimonious person to deal with another sanctimonious person. And at least this one was willing to do it to his face.
I can understand that point of view. Trump definitely can come off that way. I know a number of people personally who don't like him either. But again, I respect your opinion Jill even if I disagree with it!

If the Biden admin had had one or two reasonable policies on immigration this would not be happening.
Yeah right. It's all because of "Biden's policies on immigration" that we are in this situation. Generalization of the year.
Actually it is. Totally open borders for 4 years. No vetting of migrants. Can you imagine that the push back would be not so great? If Democrats had a brain in their heads this wouldn’t have happened.

She was effective, she has millions of people talking about her. She spoke truth to power and that cannot be dismissed.
