The Selective Outrage of Israel's Haters
Do you engage in any of the following? If so, please seek help
The last 11 months have been hard for us Jews. I have written extensively about my sadness at the betrayal that I have felt from my fellow liberals. During this time, I have noticed some patterns from Israel’s haters, which can all be categorized under the umbrella of selective outrage.
Are you engaging in selective outrage? See if you meet any of the following criteria:
Do you describe yourself as a feminist, and then try to rationalize Hamas’s acts of sexual violence against women that took place on October 7th? Do you believe that rape is a valid form of “resistance” because the party you have defined as “oppressed” committed it?
Do you refer to Israel as a state engaging in “ethnic cleansing” of Arabs without realizing that 1) 20% of the Israeli population within the Green Line is Arab, with full Israeli citizenship; and 2) It was actually the Jews who were ethnically cleansed from Muslim countries fewer than 2 generations ago? Here is a fantastic video explaining that history:
3. Are you a believer in concepts like “believe all women” and “white silence is violence,” and then go on to tell Jews how they should feel about Israel? Do you try to instruct them on the reaction(s) that they should have to statements from people whom they believed were their allies blaming Israelis (and maybe even the world Jewish community) for the events of October 7th, and what has occurred subsequently? Bonus points if you are a member of a minority group engaging in this behavior.
4. Do you feel outrage about the Hamas-reported casualty figures in Gaza, yet have no such reaction to the 500,000 Syrians who have been killed in the recent civil war within a country literally next door to Israel? Are you even aware that there is a war occurring in Yemen with as I type these words with a death toll that exceeds Gaza’s by more than 100,000? To put this a different way— do you obsess over Israel’s “war crimes,” yet do not use the same language to describe what is actively happening in Middle Eastern countries where there are no Jews present?
5. Do you use the term Zionist or Zionism as a pejorative, thus indicating that you have no idea what these terms actually mean?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above, I encourage you to seek help.
One of my sisters (a supposed feminist and advocate for LGBTQ rights) told me that I should be careful not to associate with Zionism and that the Palestinians deserve/need more sympathy than the Israelis. I am proud to still be a Zionist.
