Make No Mistake: Antisemitism Still Festers on the Right, Too!
The left may have gone bananas, but the right stays racist
Much of what has motivated my writing on this little blog of mine comes from the realization that a specific and shrill slice of the left has gone completely demented. The reason I tend to focus on that end of the aisle is because it’s where I align myself, and it’s usually more productive to call out the flaws of a group to which you belong than to criticize an out-group. I also had to process my complicated feelings for figures I once admired, like Bernie Sanders. But now that I’ve done more than my share of the heavy-lifting in exposing the antisemitism of the left, I want to make something very clear: antisemitism from the right not only still persists, it’s actively worsening now that we have the orange demagogue back in office. I may even argue that the Jew-hate emanating from that end of the aisle presents the most serious threat to us at present, given that they are the ones who now run the country.
For those of you who support the current President and/or switched teams in the last election to vote for him, I know what you’re thinking: “but Jill, Trump is the only one actively addressing antisemitism and unconditionally supporting Israel after the failed Biden policies!” Well, you forgot the part where 1) the majority of the resources that Israel received for the current war (including those 2000-lb bombs everyone loves to talk about) were sent under Biden; 2) the recent withholding of funding to universities doesn’t really target the worst offenders of the anti-Israel demonstrations and may even hurt those affected by the dysfunction that the cuts purportedly address; and 3) While Biden, a self-identified Zionist, could have done more forceful job addressing rising antisemitism post-October 7th, calling him or his policies “antisemitic” is rather far-fetched.
The vast majority of Jews in the United States still identify as Democrat, even with the crises that we faced leading up to the last clusterfuck of an election. The Jews who switched teams to vote for Trump were in no way joining a majority, just very loud. I don’t condone that choice, but I get it. When one feels helpless and alone, it’s natural to gravitate towards the party offering a quick solution to your problems. Antisemitism out of control? Get rid of Biden and put the unhinged orangutan back in charge, and he will fix it. He’s really speaking to us when the others aren’t!
Meet Steven Witkoff, Trump’s Special Envoy to the Middle East. Steven is very special because he is an actual “As a Jew” from the right:
Witkoff then continues by stating how he had been “duped by Hamas” during the hostage negotiations that he was sent to facilitate (what an idiot) and how wonderful Putin is. I bring up this specific clip about the Qataris to show how insidious this brand of antisemitism (for Witkoff, self-hate) has become. How does voicing open support for the Qataris facilitate antisemitism and anti-American values, you might ask? What has Qatar done?
Well, let’s see…
Sheltering Hamas leaders in their 5-star hotels after October 7th.
Funneling billions of dollars into western institutions to fund antisemitic and anti-American programs.
Running an entire dictatorship under sharia law while claiming to have modernized.
Using slave labor with impunity.
You have to admit, the Qataris are smart about their alliances—the largest U.S. military base in the Middle East is located in, you guessed it, Doha. Part of me actually admires them for it because they’ve managed to dupe an entire western audience into kissing their asses for money while simultaneously providing material support to anti-western terrorists. The players of the Qataris’ game hail from all ends of the political spectrum. I guess that’s what happens when you host the FIFA World Cup in a 5-star Islamist dictatorship; everyone will forgive your consummate human rights abuses if you just give them a good fútbol game at a stadium built by slaves.
If the intention of the current U.S. administration is to address antisemitism for real, they would call out the Qataris for their well-documented material support of Hamas. They would indict them as one of the key players in the rot infecting our universities. Instead, they’re pandering to them.
If you want more extreme examples from the right, we could name several: Candace Owens, who won StopAntisemitism’s distinguished Antisemite of the Year award. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who believes in our amazing ability to build space lasers (clearly she never witnessed my grandma of blessed memory attempt to operate her iPhone). Since I treated you all to Tucker Carlson’s ugly face in the video above, I’m going to bring him up again. Truthfully, Carlson might be the most dangerous conservative influencer today.
Here we have Carlson with some self-described “historian” (never heard of him…) who—this is not a joke—believes that Winston Churchill was the “chief villain” of World War II, while Hitler was just terribly misunderstood:
So after this guy—I won’t use his name because I don’t want to commit it to memory—states in plain terms that he thinks that Churchill was the bad guy during this war, Tucker responds, “make the case for that" instead of ending the interview and punching this smug idiot in the face. I guess if I wish to “make the case” that the world is flat, that Obama isn’t a U.S. citizen, and that 1+1=11, Carlson will give me a platform to do it. Everything I just listed is far more innocuous than what comes out of this weasel’s mouth next:
“Germany put themselves in a position that when they went into the east in 1941 they launched a war where the were completely unprepared to deal with the millions of POWs and political prisoners that they were going to have to handle. They just threw these people into camps, and millions of people ended up dead there. […] So they’re writing back to the high command in Berlin saying, ‘we can’t feed these people, we don’t have the food to. So rather than wait for them all to starve, wouldn’t it be more humane to finish them off quickly now?’”
I would hope that anyone who managed to remain at least partially conscious during the World War II unit of high school history class would have their bullshit detectors going off immediately. The Nazis “just threw people into camps” (like that was an accident?) and then killed them because they forgot to bring them food? This characterization may actually be an insult to the legacy of Hitler, who was a meticulous and efficient planner. I would laugh if I weren’t so disturbed that over 1 million people have watched this video already.
In case you’re not convinced yet that this asshole is actually a Jew-hater, he comes out with it plainly here:
“I argue with my Zionist interlocuters about this all the time with regard to the war in Gaza. Maybe the Germans felt like they had to invade to the east. Maybe they thought that Stalin was such a threat…but at the end of the day, they launched that war with no plan to care for the millions of civilians and POWs who were going to come under their control, and millions died because of that.”
How many “Zionist interlocuters” could this guy possibly be interacting with? Any other Zionists reading this who wish to engage in dialogue with someone who defines the victims of the Holocaust in this manner? I think I now realize why people like this douchebag demand that Jews “stop bringing up the Holocaust” in relation to Israel—because they feel they are the only ones who should have that right.
At my lowest points during the last year and a half, I felt like we Jews were wandering alone in the wilderness with nowhere to turn. I often said to myself, “we have no allies, anywhere.” But thanks to my loyal readership here, I know that’s not true. And you know the best part? That support flows from people from all different political orientations, almost to the point where it’s become impossible to tell the differences.
Carlson will do anything for a stage. He is truly a media whore. If he thinks his attention is lagging, he comes up with more and more outrageous things to say. He doesn't deserve a platform anywhere.
The antisemitism on the left is well-known and well-documented. But the old-fashioned, garden variety antisemitism of the right is very much still around. Given that the right now runs the country, I would say Jill is correct that the antisemites on the right are the biggest threat to the American Jewish community at this point and time.
The list of the top antisemites on the right consists of folks like Tucker Carlson, Andrew Tate, Jake Shields, Candace Owens, Darryl Cooper, and Reps. Marjorie Taylor-Greene of Georgia and Paul Gosar of Arizona. Darryl Cooper is a particularly egregious offender because he claims Hitler is simply misunderstood and Winston Churchill was the bad guy in World War II. Tucker Carlson didn't try to push back against this blatant revisionist history and Hitler apologia, he instead encourages him to make that case. Saying the Germans threw people into camps and killed them because they forgot to get them food?
That's absolute nonsense! Him speaking of "Zionists" which is just a euphemism for Jews, proves his anti-Jewish bigotry. But there is a silver-lining to all this hate coming from the left and right, that Jill and American Jewish community has found so many Gentile allies all across the political spectrum.
