"Morality" is the new 'social justice' dog whistle
In many ways, the horrors of October 7th feel just as fresh as they do distant. After all, it was a year and a half ago, making it old news pretty much everywhere but where it happened. The war still rages on while Hamas still holds onto dozens of hostages (most of them dead), the terror group still governs the Strip despite their elimination being one of Israel’s stated goals, and Trump’s plan to turn Gaza into a riviera for bearded belly dancers looks less likely than ever.
As we move further away from the Black Sabbath, the minds of western consumers of news move with it. Yet a vexing phenomenon continues: these same people are still completely obsessed with the overall Israel/Palestine conflict and with the war by proxy. Each day the war continues, the media covers it obsessively—now for over 500 days. For the average social media user, it’s easy to forget what exactly started this war and why it’s even happening in the first place. And no matter what other global atrocities spring up in the interim—be it civil war in Syria, an actual genocide in China, or famine in Sudan—it’s this story on a miniscule slice of the Earth’s surface that takes precedence over all else.
Here’s a genuine question for anyone who isn’t ethnically connected to this conflict:
Why do you care?
I’ve written extensively on my anger and sadness with the global left since October 7th and have learned to live with the reality that we have enemies on all ends of the aisle. I also fully recognize that much of the behavior from the merry band of anti-Israel clowns is at least part of what led us on the path back to Trump—not that they’ll ever admit their role in that.
Here are a few examples of the most twisted and hurtful things that I’ve heard repeated over and over for a year and a half:
