If the dictionary had a picture next to the phrase "self-hating Jew", Beinart's is the one they would use. This guy went off the rails a very long time ago and pretty much everyone who follows the commentary on the middle east knows it. In every era, there are always people like Peter who earnestly believe that if Jews were just a little more understanding of our enemies feelings, if we just bowed down a little lower, all the hatred would eventually go away. These folks have always existed and they've always been wrong. Their nonsense is just another aggravation to be dealt with.

He lost it when he and the New Republic, which he edited at the time, supported the Iraq war, and the war turned into a disaster. Apparently, he sacrificed his ability to reason and belief in western morality, as a mea culpa.

He might call himself Jewish, or was born to Jewish parents (I'm not going to look it up), but he isn't. You can't aid, abet, support and enable the people whose goal it is to exterminate every Jew on the planet and legitimately be Jewish.

He isn't. It's just the cover he uses to peddle his vile filth. And sadly, there are many more like him.

Yes! I actually knew Peter in college, though not well. He was very nice to me. We were both in the Liberal Party of the Yale Political Union. I recall that our party held a debate about female genital mutilation. Peter was somewhat famous if I recall correctly for his defense of it as a “cultural” practice. This was the nineties and moral relativism was all the rage. A lot of us women were very much in disagreement. What’s up with making brutality and torture okay? Great post Jill!

I’ve always believed in the two state solution in principle.. But the whole Palestiniasm movement has turned out to be a sham.. Unfortunately, in my opinion the Arab Palestinians forfeited their right to a state after Oct 7 yet again..

As Bill Clinton recently said Arafat was offered over 94 % of WB all of Gaza and East Jerusalem as capital ( instead of Ramallah which is another alternative potential capital for an Arab Palestine territory state ) in 2000 with left wing Israeli PM Ehud Barak and yet they rejected it yet again and then started terrorism against Israel for 5 years SO DONT EXPECT THE DOOR TO BE LEFT OPEN AGAIN FOR ANOTHER OFFER EACH TIIME YOU START TERRORISM AND REJECT AND REJECT ..

In my opinion Arab Palestinians forfeited their right to a seperate Arab state ( as they wanted no Jewish state instead in fact ) a long time ago in 1948 / 1947 when they rejected the partition plan. And more so when the evil Mufti of Jerusalem ( an Arab Palestinian influential leader) was offered an Arab Palestine state by the British owners of the mandate in 1939 but he rejected to work with British and sided with Hitler to stop Jews from coming to the land and siding with Hitler hoping Hitler would win in war and kill remaining Jews in Middle East and Europe and kill any formation of a Jewish state as Israel. He gabbled and lost as Hitler lost - Arabs lost Israel won.. thank goodness .. so the Arab Palestinians should have been deported to Arabs states for good after that but the world has let this problem fester all this time through UNWRA ( absurd refugee status - read Einat Wilf on this ) and left western indulgence as it also makes money to have this conflict ongoing

The Palestinian Arabs could have had an additional Arab state along side a Jewish state along time ago IN PEACE but they rejected it because they wanted no Jewish state instead. They have autonomy rule in WB ( Jordan owned it for 20 years ) and had a pilot state in Gaza and they blew it. They even have options like Jordan etc but their sole goal for the majority is the destruction of Israel.

Peter Beinart is another in a long line of Westerners who is so besotted by his own moral grandeur and the sanctity of his supposed ideals that he expects other people to suffer and die for them.

I swear if I have to hear another rich fat Westerner denounce Israel for its existence as an "ethnostate" (meaning it being a Jewish state makes it an ipso facto enemy of liberalism aka universalist humanitarianism) I may have to go full jihad. I have yet to hear any of these people denounce the dozen or so Arab ethnostates (or the Japanese or Indian or Russian ethnostates etc) nor have I ever heard them denounce Hindu or Han or Turkish nationalism. There is only one state that needs to be dismantled for Western liberals to feel safe in the glow of their sanctimony.

And if you as a Jew don't see the need for the world's most consistently vilified and brutalized minority to have its own homeland, you are either stupid, deranged or (in this case and many others) so self-centered and deracinated that you're willing to have your own people risk life and limb so you can rise in the ranks of the Western liberal class.

Jewish liberal intellectuals are another of Israel's many enemies, as they'd rather preserve their sacred conception of Jews as a morally exalted and powerless light to the Gentiles than preserve actual Jewish lives or the state that exists to protect them.

I vote for Peter Beinart to move to Gaza and try to convert Hamas and their supporters to the creed of liberal universalist humanitarianism. He gets a full stipend plus a copy of John Lennon's "Imagine" to play on every imam's loudspeaker.

Best wishes!

He wants a binational state. Maybe he should see his well that worked out in Lebanon. Can he really believe what he is saying or is it just ‘l’hachis’ (Hebrew yiddishism meaning he’s doing it to piss everyone off. In other words oppositional defiant.

The people who think there could ever be any sort of binational state where the Palestinian lion is somehow magically transformed into a gentle lamb are the most deluded of all, and in this group Peter Beinart stands out as afflicted with the most extreme case of delusional sanctimony.

But you'll never go broke selling self-flattering moralism to American liberals, it's their favorite product and they're addicts willing to pay top dollar for it.

So according to the radical left ( or radical right ) anti Zionists ( Jew or not ) Israel as a Jewish nation ( the only Jewish nation ) should just dismantle itself and self destruct among the other pure Arab etho ( Muslim majority states ) like Jordan ( who forbids jews as citizens ) and allow all Arabs called Palestinians from Jordan , Lebanon - West Bank and Gaza as citizens…. Wtf ? The hypocrisy is grotesque and absurd. WHY DOESNT JORDAN ( or Qatar or Egypt ) give all all remaining Arab Palestinian full equal rights in Jordan under Muslim rule with all its right and liabilities that come with it under Arab Muslim sovereignty rule in Jordan or Egypt etc ( and dismantle UNWRA which is absurdly artificial defines a refugee to the point of a scam farce. If they don’t do it - they should. Israel will not and must not ever agree to such suicide mission..

It’s so perverse. I saw a picture of him standing in front of his bookshelf with tons of ‘sforim’ (Jewish texts) as if he’s the big Jew in the room. He could be severely critical of Israel but that’s not what he does. He has crossed the line to be against Israel’s actual existence as a Jewish state.

Maybe not but it does a hell of a lot better of a job than Beinart’s proposed one state solution would.
