Goyim (noun): a Hebrew term for non-Jews/gentiles.
For more than a year now, Jews around the world have collectively carried the burdens prompted by the aftermath of October 7th, 2023. They feel like weights we cannot shed for however long the war continues. For us, it’s impossible to look away from the sharp rise of antisemitism throughout the diaspora, the virulent demonstrations on college campuses, and the gradual social acceptability of non-Jews telling us how to feel about our own religion.
I carry the burdens of all of the above 24/7. My non-Jewish friends and colleagues do not. October 7th is old news to them — if they even remember its significance all. I envy them somewhat for that.
Below I have two significant examples of people exercising their goyim privilege since the outbreak of Israel-Hamas War:
Exhibit A: “Jesus was an indigenous Palestinian”
When this idea began gaining traction on social media the week before Christmas 2023, I just figured it was so stupid, a normal Christian clergyperson would know to dismiss it. But I was dead wrong. Over the holiday, I tuned in to a livestream of a church service to watch a family friend sing in her choir. The pastor then delivered a sermon during which she said the following statements with complete confidence:
Bethlehem is part of Gaza
The Church of the Annunciation is in the West Bank
If Jesus, a Palestinian, were born today it would be under Israeli fire
I could not believe what I was hearing. Surely a Christian clergyperson should know that Jesus was a Jew born in Judea. There were no Palestinians during the time of Jesus. Palestine is not mentioned once in the New Testament because the land was not called that until around 130 CE after the Romans, the OG colonizers, expelled the Jews from the territory. The specific purpose for this renaming was to disavow the Jews of their connection to the land.
I would argue that calling Jesus a Palestinian is not only an insult to Jews, but also a slap in the face to Jesus, his family, and his disciples — all of whom were from Judea. If he (a Jewish baby) were born in late 2023, it would be fair to assume that he would be a target of Hamas or Hezbollah, not the IDF.
It has become glaringly obvious that hate towards Israel has become its own sort of religion that has spread like a horrible virus throughout the West. It doesn’t matter if what you’re saying is true or factual, just how it informs behavior. If a viral image of a plastic doll wrapped up a keffiyeh is what you need to project your message to a church or college campus full of useful idiots, so be it.
Think there will be a repeat of this lunacy for Christmas 2024? Perhaps they have educated their ignorance. Guess we will find out soon.
Exhibit B: “Please help make me sound not antisemitic”
A fellow Substack writer who wishes to remain anonymous has given me permission to reproduce the story below.
Recently, the writer received an email from a minister of a local Unitarian church asking for his Jewy assistance. I am just going to post it here; we will discuss after:
I am [Mr. Potato Head], Minister at [Unitarian Church of the Holy Potato]. We engaged a bit last year, first over the issue of JVP speakers, and then at the forum run by Rev. [Coconut Head] of the [Church of the Holy Coconut] antisemitism forum.
I am trying to reach you now because our congregation is preparing to make a statement calling for ceasefire in Gaza and a limitation to U.S. military aid for Israel.
I assume that the Jewish community holds a wide range of opinions on these issues — that some are supportive of these positions and others fully opposed. Consensus is not my concern here.
What I care about is making sure that if we do make such a statement that it can be received in a way that is not perceived as antisemitic. We are actively taking a position that opposes many of the current actions of the Israeli government and the U.S. government. We are acutely worried about the well-being of the Palestinian people in Gaza, in Israel, and in the surrounding nations. None of us know how this issue can be resolved, but we are aghast that an apparent genocide is being perpetrated in the name of a secure Israeli state.
Read the words of Minister Potato Head that I chose to embolden again. His concern above all else isn’t Jews, Palestinians, or anyone else affected by the current state of affairs, but rather how he might appear to an outside audience. This concern supersedes, both in his writing an in reality, any feeling of “aghast” over the Israel-Hamas War. The term for this is narcissism.
Minister Potato Head then has the chutzpah to ask our anonymous writer to serve as his Human Jew Shield to vindicate his anger about “an apparent genocide being perpetrated in the name of a secure Israeli state.” I mean, how could the Human Jew Shield lucky enough to be selected for this task think that Israel’s actions amount to anything other than “genocide,” and then have the audacity to expect a secure Israeli state at the same time?!
Well, this Jew is no dummy. The first thing that stood out to him was the minister’s omission of what prompted the war in the first place.
Here is an excerpt of his response to Minister Potato Head. You can read it in its entirety here.
Thank you for reaching out. First off, I am speaking for myself and no one else. Certainly what is happening to the innocent people of Palestine is horrific. But stating that you are “aghast” at what is happening in Gaza as “an apparent genocide is being perpetrated in the name of a secure Israeli state” is deeply misguided and tone deaf to both sides. While your intentions might be good, your email leaves out one major factor: the savage attack on Israel out of Gaza by Palestine’s Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023. An attack in which 1,200 Israelis and other nationalities were brutally murdered. While most were Israelis, there were others. Americans. Thai. Filipino. Nepalese. Ukrainian. Russian. Argentinean. French. German. Chinese. Nepalese. Sri Lankan. Tanzanian. An attack where 240 people were dragged into Gaza as hostages: women, men, children, infants, a woman who worked for peace between Israel and Palestine, a woman who was a survivor of the Holocaust. An attack in which 1,200 Jews, Christians, Muslims, and others were slaughtered without mercy. And an attack in which a member of my extended family was hacked to pieces by Hamas terrorists.
[…]
You tell me “I do wish to be able to learn about any aspects of our possible statement that ring of antisemitism to you.” Acknowledging the evil perpetrated in Israel at the hands of Hamas is a good start. Another suggestion: acknowledge the plague of antisemitism around the world by “protestors” claiming that Israel should be eradicated “from the river to the sea.” Some of these so-called “protests” are violent, some of them are deadly.
Other than this advice, I will not hand you nor your congregation a “Get Out of Antisemitic Jail Free Card.”
We must commend this anonymous writer and everyone else like him who have dealt with these types of goyim ever, but in the last year especially.
Goy silence is violence!
Now that you’ve gotten this far, you are ready to take my patented Goyim Privilege Quiz! I created it based on the critical race theory framework of my hero Robin DiAngelo, so it’s safe to assume that it’s undergone rigorous peer review.
